this picture is showing what happens in an eclipse. the moon cover the sun. since the sun is not shining it is dark from earth. there is some parts where the sun is still shining. those spots usually later get covered.
The highly anticipated total solar eclipse on Aug. 21 may be spectacular, but it won't last long. The map shows the part of the U.S. where it will last the longest. although it doesn't last long it is spectacular. just remember not to look with out special glasses.
