A solar eclipse happens when the moon is between the sun and earth and the moon casts a shadow over the earth. A solar eclipse can only happen when the sun is in a new moon phase.
The next solar eclipse will be on August 21, 2017.
In many cultures myths about solar eclipses involved mythical creatures stealing or eating the sun. in most places it was believed that something like a dragon, frog, or that Rahu´s head eats or swallows the sun and thats what causes a solar eclipse. but in Korea it was believed the mythical dogs tried to steal the sun.
A partial eclipse happens when the sun its only partly covered by the moon. Total eclipses are when the sun is fully covered by the moon. An annular eclipse is happens when the sun is totally covered by the moon except a bright ring around the circumference of the sun.
Solar eclipse watchers know that Sunday's 'hybrid' solar eclipse comes around only once in 159 years. A hybrid solar eclipse happens when one kind of eclipse morphs into another.
