On Monday, August 21, for the first time in 99 years, a total solar eclipse will come across the United States. But it has been 38 years since the mainland United States has seen a total eclipse. The last one was in 1979, and that swept only a handful of northwestern states. The last eclipse to cross the United States was the The Ring of Fire but it was a annular eclipse not a full eclipse. It was nicknamed the Ring of Fire because the moon covered up 94% of the light from the sun. A total eclipse happens every 12 to 18 months somewhere in the world, but more often then not its over water.
A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes in front of the sun and casts a shadow on the earth. The sun is about 400 times farther from the earth than moon and the sun is approximately 400 times larger than the moon. Which is what causes the sun and moon to look the same size while looking at them from earth. The rarest form of eclipse is a hybrid eclipse which starts as a total eclipse then goes to a annual eclipse depending on where you view it from earth. The fact I found most interesting was that the speed of the Moon as it moves across the Sun is approximately 1,398 miles per hour.
I chose this cite because it talks about the effect of the solar eclipse on marine life. It says that fish will become more active when the solar eclipse starts so there for if you are fishing you will be more likely to get a bite. Professor Rob Young says " Fishermen have reported changes in how the fish hit their lines during an eclipse." Rob also said "During a full eclipse, diurnal species have been observed to stop feeding and seek shelter and some nocturnal species start to emerge and become active." Ghost crabs are also being predicted to be more active during the solar eclipse. The explanation for most of this is because these animals either come out at night or take shelter at night and hide from the predators.
I chose this cite because it describes some solar eclipses as early as 2500 BC and as late as 2026. The earliest people to view the solar eclipse were the Babylonians and the ancient Chinese people. They found out the Babylonians were also quite accurate when they predicted the solar eclipses. This cite predicted the next total solar eclipse would be on February 17, 2026. The fact I found most interesting was that according to the Greek historian Herodotus a solar eclipse stopped a war between the Lydians and the Medas.
