Sparta, now known as modern day Spartí, was one of greatest civilization during their time. Founded during the ninth century B.C.E with a oligarchy and a senate with 30 members, the ruling class of Sparta dedicated itself into war and discipline. It also mained in arts, philosophy, literature, and most importantly, military skills. In addition, Sparta had a ruler named Leonidas. He started to rule in about 490 B.C. Leonidas also helped Sparta in the Battle of Thermopylae against the Persian army. Then, after the war, he died in 490 B.C. The Spartans also fought in the Corinthian War, but Leonidas didn't join them. They started fighting against the Persians from 395 from 387 B.C. After the war, they won and the "prize" for the war were two lands. After a long time fighting wars and taking over land, the Spartan empire got destroyed by the Visigoths in 396 B.C.E. Then, almost 800 years after the destruction of the Spartan empire, the Byzantines repopulated the land and name the new fortress city, Mistra, on a sharp hill southwest of the actual Sparta city. About 50 years after they built the fortress, the Byzantines the capital of the city, Depotate of Morea and it lasted for about two centuries. Then, the present city, Néa Spartí, is was built in 1834 and is still standing today.
During their time, the Spartans were one of the greatest warriors of all time. But, there was a lot of training that had to be done to become a Spartan Warrior. Also, it wasn't easy being one. In fact, it was really stressful and complicated to be one of the legendary and great Spartan warrior. But it all starts out from being a little weak and no muscle infant from a great, strong, lots of muscle warrior. First, as a baby, their parents had to bring them up to a group of Spartan inspectors for a physical defect. A physical defect is a like a check up where the inspectors see if there is anything wrong with the infant. If there is, they would leave them to die in the middle of nowhere. If the baby had nothing wrong with him, then they could be a Spartan warrior when they grew up. Also, the inspectors had to bathe the little one in wine instead of water. During this process, the baby would cry and cry because of the wine, but the inspectors just ignored the baby. the purpose of this is to practice not being afraid of anything, even if it hurts. Even if the parents or the child doesn't want to do the bath, it was mandatory. It had to be done by both genders, male and female, so the women could not just skip this constitution. According to the famous Greek biographer and essayist, Plutarch, these painful, but good techniques were so effective that were widely sought to be nannies and babysitters.
Once at age seven, Spartan boys had to move away from their homes and had to begin the Agoge. An Agoge is a type of training that makes the Spartan boys into the fierce Spartan warriors that everyone knows today. After they leave their parents, they had to go to a barrack. Thats where they learn to train to be a Spartan. Then, at age 12 they "graduate" from that stage and move on to the next one. Also, when they turn twelve, the young Spartan warriors wore a red cloak and had to sleep outside with a bed. In addition, they also were highly recommended to steal items at that age. Even if it was bad, they were still recommended to do it. If they got caught stealing something like an apple, they were hit by adults. The boys were not only expected to grow up to be fighters, in fact, women were expected as well. They needed to learn to be fighters because they needed to handle their children in the house. So, that way, the little Spartan babies can't go crazy. Instead of going away from their parents, young Spartan women were allowed to stay with their parents and have a good education and training program. Since the Spartan boys were in the barrack practicing to be a Spartan Warrior, the girls needed to have some training too. For example, they practice javelin and discus throwing during training. They also did some non-athletic activities such as dancing and gymnastics. These were what the Spartan kids did from seven to twelve year old.
Spartan Men are probably why Sparta was famous in the first place. If it weren't for the fierce men who were Spartan warriors, then Sparta probably wouldn't be famous at all. It would just be an ancient city. But, every time a warrior is finished with his training, he has a responsibility that had to make them fit, strong, and powerful. But, not only Spartan men had to be warriors, they were expected to show their skill in fighting, showing knowledge, and education. But, if a Spartan man chose the right path to run, he could become a great, fearsome, strong Spartan warrior that is part of the world famous Spartan army. But, it could be risky choice taking the chance to be a Spartan warrior. A warrior could get really hurt, suffer in rage, or even die. But, every Spartan man who is over 30 has to fight in the Spartan army. In the Spartan military, every warrior is ruled by discipline and strictness. It is like they're still in the barrack where they trained to be a warrior, but they have more freedom to fight. After all the fighting for a Spartan warrior, they have to retire at the age of sixty. At the age of sixty, they don't have to fight in the Spartan military anymore. Instead, they have to join the Gerousia. The Gerousia is a council of Spartan retirements who are over the age of sixty. There are thirty members in this council. 28 of are the retirements and the other two are Spartan kings. Then, they stay in the Gerousia untill they die. This is how life is like being a Spartan man.
Spartan warriors were all men, but that doesn't mean the Spartan women weren't strong. Most Spartan female were strong and healthy, but they weren't allowed to join the Spartan army. Instead, they had to work in the village to keep their citizens healthy. They also had more education than the boys. They didn't attend boarding schools unlike the boys and they were separated from them. In addition, the grown up women had to take care of the household and home. Spartan women were didn't just do house work, they also were good at dancing, reading, vocalizing, riding a horse, sprinting, and fighting. When Spartan women get pregnant, they have so much pressure in which gender it is going to be. The reason of this is because when having a boy as a child, the women only get to see them limited times till they're 30. Marriage was also important to have sons to Spartan women. They mostly married when they were around eighteen through twenty. Spartan men who took cared more than one son was rewarded while men with no sons were shamed in public But, some women married men who were under 30. So, when everyone was sleeping, they would sneak out of the barrack and visit their wives. But, the reason why these men would do crazy things for their wives was for their natural beauty. Almost every Spartan women was known for it. Because of this, they didn't wear any make up at all, even at parties. Like the Spartan men, the women could drink wine whenever they wanted to and eat whenever they were hungry. This is what its like to be a Spartan women
