Weekly Writing Focus #3 was about if we knew what it was like to be an outsider. Mrs. Castro wanted us to see if we could relate to anyone from 'The Outsiders' book. I said I could relate and I knew what it was like because I traveled from schools a little and was the new kid and I didn't have a lot of friends so I just felt a little lonely.
Our class's first book that we read together was 'The House on Mango Street'. This book had a bunch of little stories about the main character's experiences, these little stories are called vignettes. Mrs. Castro assigned her classes to write their own vignettes about significant experiences in their life.
When I went to Washington D.C. we went to the Newseum. It was one of the coolest places we went to that entire trip because I got to see the Bill Nye's lab coat, Oscar the Grouch, and the Batmobile!! We saw many over cool things but that was one of my favorites by far.
There's this show my mom and I watch together it's called Gilmore Girls. This show is like 'our show', no one else in our family likes it, so when my dad and sister are sleeping, my mom and I binge watch it. It's important to me because the two main characters have a mother-daughter bond like my mom and I have.
My group's Holocaust book was called 'Rose Under Fire' by Elizabeth Wein. It was about an American ATA pilot getting captured by the Natzis. The book is about how she escaped, who she met, and her experiences in the camps.
We had a couple who survived the Holocaust come to our school and share their story and experiences with us. Our class wrote thank you letters to them because they traveled far to see our class and we were grateful for them to share with us.
After reading our Literature Circle Holocaust book we got into groups and were assigned topics about the Holocaust. My group's topic was early persecution, so we wrote about The Night of Broken Glass, Jewish Ghettos, registration, and deportation.
This assignment was given to us after we read 'The Outsiders'. Johnny kills a boy named Bob, but there is evidence in the book that created conflict about whether Johnny wanted to kill Bob or if it was all self-defense. I wrote about how Johnny was innocent.
In this assignment we had to write a response about what we thought about arranged marriages, the pros and cons, and if we thought they were fair. This task is also related to 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' because Hermia loves Lysander but her father is forcing her to marry Demetrius.
Our class had some poetry lessons and I wrote about Disneyland. Everyone who goes to Disneyland knows how much fun it is but after about an hour your feet start to hurt.
This is a link to the 2016 Women's Volleyball Olympic Qualifier video. When my mom first saw me play my first game on the Willowside team, she told me her dream about me being a professional beach volleyball player along with my sister. And from then on I've wanted to be like one of these girls playing in the Olympics.
