America is seeing some similarities with the book “1984”, by George Orwell, on the subject of surveillance. According to the Statistical Transparency Report Regarding Use of National Security Authorities, the government has stored “half a billion phone calls and text messages” in 2017 alone. This should cause some worry. The government is prying into our private lives without us knowing about it. This is the type of behavior exhibited by dictators afraid of an overthrow. This behavior is similar to the behaviors exhibited in the government of Oceana, but they make it publicly known that its citizens are being surveilled. With the use of telescreens, they listen and watch the actions of the civilians, scrutinizing over small facial expressions and movements. If America lets its government get away with the spying it has been doing, it might just slip into the pattern portrayed by 1984.
