This political cartoon is a rollercoaster that is symbolizing the stock market. The stock market was a rollercoaster, one day your stock would be super high and then the next it could be low, it just depended on the company’s strategy and risks they took. Right before the stock market crash, everyone’s stock was rising and there was ”false prosperity’, but what goes up must come down and the stock market did (ethanhansen). During 1929 the stock market crashed and millions of people lost all of their money. This political cartoon does a great job illustrating what the stock market crash was like in terms of a rollercoaster. I think it was very creative and does really well showing people what happened, the highs and lows and then the crash. At the beginning of the song he is talking about the American Dream and how he thought he was living it, he had a job, he was making money. Unfortunately, with the crash and the Great Depression, he ended up losing his job and becoming penniless. He went from living his American to having to basically beg on the streets and to people he used to work with to get by. This song just really encompasses what life was like for ex-workers during this time. I like how this song captures that. It is a simple song but it still has an impact on whoever is listening to or reading the lyrics. It shows how the stock market crash and Great Depression can really just turn your life around and leave you empty handed. This picture titled American Gothic depicts the life of farmers during the Depression. After the stock market crash, many farmers also fell into the Depression and out of work. As seen in the solemn faces of the father and daughter, these were hard times. With most people unemployed and penniless, they could not afford farmed goods and depended on breadlines and soup kitchens, because of this farmers also fell out of work and submerged in the Depression. American Gothic is one of my favorite paintings from this era. The almost expressionless faces illustrates the toll the Great Depression took on American farmers. They were out of work and, therefore, out of money. They could grow their own food for a while but they are making no profit out of it. Many think this is a husband and wife but it is actually a father and daughter. This makes the painting even more impactful because it really MLA Citation: Newhart, Elizabeth. “Painting in 1930s America: 10 Iconic Artworks at the Art Institute of Chicago.” Culture Trip, 9 Aug. 2016, theculturetrip.com/north-america/usa/illinois/articles/painting-in-1930s-america-10-iconic-artworks-at-the-art-institute-of-chicago/.
Most of these photos capture the hard life during the Great Depression: the unemployment, having to sell everything to try and stay afloat, breadlines and soup kitchens, the dust bowl and just the overall struggle people were hit with. One of the most famous photographs is called Migrant Mother, the photo expresses a migrant family who are probably farmers. With their dirty and poor clothing and worried expression on the mother’s face, anyone can see that they are struggling. The mother is worried for her children’s future and she is most likely only depending on her husband so they can just hopefully scrape by. In my opinion, this photograph greatly captures a glimpse into what life was like during the Great Depression, especially for migrant workers. They come to America for a chance to live their best life, yet they are hit by the Depression and struggle to survive. The way the photographer captured the stress, worried look on the mother’s face is very captivating and draws you in, making you wonder what exactly is happening. This article is talking about how the U.S. didn’t really learn from the Great Depression stock market crash. It is saying that history is bound to repeat itself especially since America did not take much from the 1930s. We know what happened but we chose to overlook it and move on. He is basically saying that the crash can happen again, very easily in fact, if banking systems are not careful. I think what Krugman is saying is very true. A lot has happened in American history and you would think we would learn from it but in reality that is not the truth. Americans are very smart but a lot of the times it seems that we don’t learn from our past. While the banking systems did improve there is still error for this to happen again, sooner and easier than we anticipate. This article from 1946 explains what happened with the stock market crash. It started when many people heard of the fortune others were making off the stock market by investing their money, so many people gravitated towards that. While many people did make money from the stock market it was a false prosperity. It showed that they had a lot of money but the bank doesn’t keep that much money in their system so when people went to back to take out their money the bank didn’t have it and that is when the stock market crash happened. I think people should’ve seen something like this happening. Did they really nothing would happen and they would just keep getting money?
