This song is very upbeat while also sounding sturn. The lyrics are very motivating, in the sense of winning a war and coming home after it. The lyrics of the song talks about Johnny coming home and the parties that will happen upon his arrival. Everyone will be happy when Johnny comes marching home because that symbolizes the end of the war. In my opinion, this some would motivate me to just get the war over with and to come home and be able to have fun. This song is very catchy and might get stuck in the soldiers or anyone’s head, which would probably motivate them to get whatever they’re doing over with. In this painting, it shows the Union on the left and the Confederates on the right. They both have many people and they both have guns, but the Union has cannons and and more soldiers. On the ground of the Confederate side, you can see the soldiers who have fallen and this symbolizes the Confederate side losing the war. This painting is a painting that you can almost see the fear and the brutality. It looks as if the war just froze in time. The Union’s side is very clearly the winning side, they have cannons, they have a strong line, and they have not lost a soldier, while on the Confederate side everyone seems to be wounded and they have lost several soldiers. This documentary used a collection of 16,000 photographs of the civil war, period paintings, lithographs, and headlines, along with footage of Civil War veterans, live video footage of formal battlegrounds, interviews with prominent historians, and even first-person accounts. This methodology used by Ken Burns of using real images from the war creates an emotional story that convinces you that the person was really there and that really happened to them. He uses these techniques to engage the watcher and to have a lot of sympathy for the people living in the time. MLA Citation: Burns, Ken, et al. The Civil War: a Film by Ken Burns. PBS, 1990.
This image depicts African-American soldiers collecting corpses of other soldiers that died the war. This photo was taken in 1865, and the Civil War happened from May to June of 1864, which means that these corpses stayed there for 6 to 18 months. These African-American soldiers are picking corpses up so long after the war ended that they are only bones remaining. They are doing this out of respect because the soldiers they are picking up were likely fighting for the rights of the African-Americans. In my opinion, the African-American soldiers look very remorseful. To me they seem like they know that what they are doing is the right thing but they don’t want to do it. The way the photo was taken shows the skulls of the fallen soldiers and they are almost looking at you. MLA Citation: Reekie, John. This article talks about farmers hoarding their crops with the idea that food prices will raise up due to the war. The farmers want to make more money and take advantage of the war. The article argues to not hoard the crops and to help support the war effort because people need food. This was written from the South side near the beginning of the war. While it would be a good cause to not hoard the food that is scarce, maybe the farmers didn’t support the idea of the war. This was at the beginning of the war when people still had enthusiasm, by the end of the war people were devastated and were literally starving. In this article, it talks about a surgeon who is a volunteer to give the soldiers medical treatment. It is very descriptive and it makes you imagine how gruesome it is and how much pain the soldiers went through. In my opinion, this article makes the reader think about how brutal this war was and how many people lost their lives. This article also shows that many people lost their lives in this war but most of the ones who did survive lost an arm or leg.
