This song by the music artist Logic, discusses the topic of it being okay for you to be yourself. He says, "I ain't ashamed to be white, I ain't ashamed to be black." Logic is biracial, and by this he means that he's not afraid of showing who he really is and that the listeners shouldn't be either. In TKAM, Dolphus Raymond has children with a black woman and does not mind what people care about his decisions. This is the kind of idea that Logic wants to express through his music.
While the issue of racism has improved in the past few decades, it is still a major part of society today. On February 18, 2018, Devonte Smith-Pelly received racial comments from 4 onlookers at a Capitals vs. Black Hawks hockey game. The player was in the penalty box when the spectators made their alleged remarks. Apparently they had been chanting, "basketball, basketball, basketball." Later in the game, the audience members were removed from the arena. In TKAM, Tom Robinson had very racial slurs thrown at him throughout the trial process. The prosecutor talked to him in a very demeaning way during that time as well.
Trayvon Martin was a black, 17 year-old boy who was shot dead on February 26, 2012 by George Zimmerman. Martin had been walking back to his house from a 7-Eleven when Zimmerman called the police saying there was a "suspicious person" in his neighborhood. He was told not to follow Martin, but he did. After that there was an altercation between the two and a gunshot rang out. When police arrived on scene, "they found Martin face down in the grass." Zimmerman also had injuries to his head. In TKAM, Tom Robinson was said to be guilty for something he obviously didn't do. Trayvon Martin was shot for just looking suspicious probably for the reason that he had darker skin.
