ANNNOTATIONS: The people on the show talk about how it is National "Day Without Immigrants" Day and how it would affect not only their show, but our population as a whole if immigrants weren't around. They talk about how we are all immigrants or somehow in someone related to one. They then show the note that a restaurant received from a very rude customer who said they would not come back because it was run by immigrants. They then scold this man for his ignorant opinion and talk about how necessary immigrants are to our country. SUMMARY: This video shows that some people in our country are still unaccepting of immigrants and can sometimes be very rude about it. Immigrants face a lot of scrutiny in this country in the modern even though it shouldn't be that way. What's shown in this video is something very minor compared to the other things that have happened to others in this country. WHY IS THIS VIDEO THE BEST CHOICE? This video is the best choice because it shows a real-life example of how poorly some of the immigrants in our country are treated.
ANNOTATIONS: In this video a yellow toaster made in the U.S. faces culture shock in a new destination. He tries to fit into the wall outlet but he's not the right kind of plug for it. He also gets very scared by tea pot/ kettle. He almost slips in the water when trying to get past the sink. After getting very angry he shoves himself in the outlet but explodes because he is not the right kind of plug. SUMMARY: This video shows what culture shock is like. This is what Ashima faces when she comes to America and her and her family face social ostracization because of their Bengali roots. The toaster is very frightened by many of the things in the place where he ends up and we he tried to fix himself to fit in he got hurt. In culture shock when you try to conform yourself to the new society you're in you can end up unhappy because you're leaving what you love to appease other people. WHY IS THIS THE BEST VIDEO: This is the best video because it shows culture shock in an easily comprehendible way and relates to my book. Because of culture shock Gogul strays from the Bengali culture to fit in with his friends and in an effort to be "his own man".
ANNOTATIONS: This video actually describes the 10 hardest things immigrants face. Although meant for migrants to Canada I still feel this fits my theme. The first hardest issue, the language, is usually the hardest for immigrants to a new place. This is easily relatable to my book because when Ashima is giving birth to Gogul in the hospital a nurse corrects her english and Ashima is very embarrassed to have made the mistake and angry at herself. Although there were only 10 reasons in this video there are many more that immigrants face. SUMMARY: This video explains almost all of what Ashoke, Ashima, and Gogul faced in America and what led Gogul to stray away from Bengali tradition therefore straying from his family. It look the big shock of his father dying to realize he loves his family and culture and how much he missed them and what a big mistake he made by leaving. Although tragic, it was what Gogul needed to realize where he belonged, where he was happy. WHY IS THIS THE BEST VIDEO: This is the best video because it educates the readers on the issues that the characters in the book are facing so it's easier to relate and understand what's going on. Once a person can realize that these issues are still prevalent to our society they can really comprehend what's going on in the book on a new level.
