In this school year, I wasn't able to listen to a lot of music but when I do, I usually enjoy listening to any songs that are popular at the time. The songs would be catchy and would be stuck in my head all day long. Listening to music would also be a way out of the stress I have at school. Not only does it allow me to sing like I already do in chorus, but it can also be relaxing to lay or sit down, put my headphones on and enjoy upbeat and energetic music. For example, one of my favorite songs so far this year would be "It Ain't Me" by Selena Gomez and Kygo. I like this song because it is very upbeat and a song that I can easily create a dance to. I discovered this song from a Youtube dance video during the time I was procrastinating while doing homework. I remember being obsessed with this song the first day I found out about it. As time progressed, I played this song on repeat while doing homework. It actually helped a lot because most of the song is good rhythm and beats so I didn't have to worry about singing along. Of course there were many other songs I was obsessed with, but I remember very clearly as this song being something that helped me during the school year. Therefore, music is a part of my curation because it motivated me to finish my work and also get my mind off of school for 2-3 minutes to a song that is catchy and energetic.
Although I never really liked to read, after choosing the book "And We Stay" by Jenny Hubbard, my view on reading has changed. Reading is not as bad as I thought it was. It really depends on the choice of books you choose. I chose this book to be a part of my curation because it's rare for me to read and this book was the beginning of more books I might enjoy reading in the future. In this particular book, there were poems in the book that were written by the main character, Emily Beam. The poems appeared at the end of every chapter which I thought was unique and interesting. This is something that motivated me to keep moving forward because I have something to do in my spare time rather than being on my phone all the time. I feel like I'm increasing my knowledge the more I read which is a good thing.
In my English class this year, I wrote several poems about various topics. For example, this poem is an Ekphrastic poem which is where we choose a certain topic to write about based off of an image. The image I chose includes a dancer surrounded by lamp posts in a misty night. I chose to include this poem in my curation because out of all the poems I wrote in this class, I thought my Ekphrastic poem was the strongest. Also, the poem talks about dance which is something I enjoy very much. Writing the poem made me feel motivated to keep moving forward because once I felt confident with the work I was going to submit, it made me feel that I might have hope for doing well in one of the classes I usually don't get an "A" in. Therefore, this poem was a piece I was proud of and was one thing that motivated me to keep moving forward academically.
Another elective I am taking in my freshman year is chorus. This clip is from the Winter Concert in December and this song was about reflecting to the events in our lives that we are parting from and saying farewell to but will always remain in our hearts. I chose this video to be a part of my curation because this class was helpful to me. During the day, I could get overwhelmed with all the work I have to do but I have chorus 9th period everyday which was fortunate. From the 10 minutes of warming up in the beginning of class to the rehearsing of the many songs we were going to sing for our concert, this class was always entertaining and full of energy. Although it was a lot of work to sing in unison, sing the correct notes and remember the lyrics, the end result would always be worth being patient for. Having chorus as the last class of the day made me feel relieved because I can kind of relax and end the day with something easy. Therefore, I looked forward to this class everyday and was one of the things that kept me motivated this year.
Since the beginning of the year, my group and I have been choreographing a dance that we will be performing in a show that is put together by the club members. This is a clip taken out of our dance piece. Throughout the year, my group and I have been choreographing a dance which was not easy at all. Whether it was having to create a CD multiple times, trying to think of new dance moves, or figuring out what makeup and costume would work for our piece, it was hard work and sometimes stressful but I thought of what the finished piece would look like. Our hard work would pay off and this was something I looked forward to. It may not have been the best piece we could have choreographed but all of us enjoy dance so when we practiced together almost every week, it was something that kept me motivated to keep looking forward to participating in an activity that I really enjoy.
As one of my electives for freshman year, I took Photography. This project was called "Free Choice" meaning I could take photos of any object(s) that I wanted to. I chose these photographs because photography has been a huge part of my freshman year. This was something new I tried this year and I really enjoyed it. It was a class I looked forward to if I was stressed with all my school work. I looked forward to taking new photos with a camera and working with equipment I have never used before. For example, I used many chemicals like a developer, stop bath and a fixer. In the beginning of the year, I was struggling but as time progressed, I started to enjoy taking photos and the long but creative process. Therefore, this class was one of the things that motivated me to keep moving forward this year and I'm glad with my decision to take this class.
I chose this image of Rosie The Riveter with her signature "We Can Do It" line and pose because the meaning behind it is important. A few years ago, I found this picture floating around the internet and immediately thought of the meaning behind this. The image represents the many women who worked in factories to create war supplies and other necessities for men who fought in the military in World War ll. The line "We Can Do It" is a reminder to stay determined throughout the year when I wanted to give up. This image was picked for my project because it is one of my favorite images that also represents the theme of "Things That Motivated Me To Keep Moving Forward This Year".
