A) Muhammad Ali wasn’t just a fighter in the ring, but influenced many to stand up for their rights. Ali was stripped of his boxing title when he refused to enter the army in the Vietnam War. Not only was his boxing license suspended he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison along with a fine. But that didn’t stop him at all. Ali is inspirational but also a constant reminder to never box as a career. B) He passed away last year from Septic Shock C) Muhammad Ali has inspired many and still does to stand up for themselves.
A) The Wright Brothers are primarily known for their invention of the first powered and sustained airplane. B) I enjoy planes and even may be thinking of becoming a pilot! C) Planes are now used for transportation, professional sport teams, in the military, etc.
A) Before the official start of World War II, the 1936 Olympics was hosted in Berlin. Hitler, beginning to gain power, basically banned Jews from competing allowing Germany to win many events. But runner Jesse Owens had other plans in mind and although surrounded by Germans, he stood out with his 4x100 relay team by winning the gold medal in front of Hitler. B) I run track (200m and 4x200) as well, so this team influences me to run my hardest and no matter the odds, I can win. C) He influences many to push through and work hard. No matter how many barriers he had to go though he made it and was successful in his and the eyes of many others today.
A) Unlike Jackie Robinson, Earl Lloyd is not given much recognition for breaking the NBA’s color line. Alongside him, Chuck Cooper was the first drafted African American and Nat Clifton was the first African American to sign a contract. B) I personally don’t give them as much credit as the possibly deserve. C) The NBA now has a combination of races.
A) The NCAA (founded in 1906) hosts March Madness (founded in 1939;) a college basketball tournament played in March. Its popularity increased dramatically bringing more entertainment and more recognition to young basketball talent. B) I watch March Madness each year it comes on. I love watching all the young players getting ready to advance into the NBA. C) March Madness still returns every March and has many viewers each year as more talented players leave high school and enter college.
A) Jackie Robinson was born on January 31, 1919 in Georgia. He is known for his strength and courage in breaking the Major League Baseball’s color barrier in 1947. B) Jackie is my favorite baseball player of all time. He has influenced me to strive for the best. No matter how hard it may seem, you CAN make a difference. C) He is celebrated seasonally as the players wear his number 42 in April. The MLB now has a combination of many different races.
A) “The National Collegiate Athletic Association (founded in 1906; Indianapolis, IN) is a member-led organization dedicated to the well-being and lifelong success of college athletes.” It was actually founded by 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. B) I would like to one day enters this organization. C) The NCAA stills stands today with many colleges and athletes across the nation.
A) The first professional ice hockey league was the International Pro Hockey League, founded in 1904 in Michigan. The National Hockey League (founded in 1917; Montreal, Canada) is a combination of American and Canadian leagues that helped build sport fan relationships. Many players from Europe joined as well. B)When I was younger I always wanted to be a goalie like Jimmy Howard. I still enjoy watching the sport. C) The NHL still stands today with 31 current teams after the Las Vegas Golden Knights joined over the summer and currently are the second best team behind the Tampa Bay Lightning.
A) The National Football League (founded in 1920; Canton, OH) is a sport that not only Americans love but many across the world. It, like the NBA brought people together and even today the league may soon expand into Europe! B) I love watching and playing football for fun. Many NFL players like Larry Fitzgerald and Julio Jones always make me want to play (but my mom doesn’t). C) The NFL still stands today with 32 current teams
A) The National Basketball Association (founded in 1946; New York City, NY) was a combination of two former leagues. The National Basketball League (NBL) and the Basketball Association of America (BAA). This brought more cities into one league bringing more entertainment and connections of cities across the country. B) I love watching and playing basketball for fun. The NBA is my favorite professional league. C) The NBA still stands today with 30 current teams
