The silence of the lambs was first a book but once published the author felt it was worthy enough to become a movie. Although it wasn't the best horror movie it's definitely still at the top of the chart for horror movies based off books.

Stephen King's novel "Cujo" published in September, 1981. What makes makes this movie and novel so good is it tells us a story about monsters that lurk inside us and that can sometimes that can also happen anyone. With the main protagonist life already falling out of control so she reflects on how things could change to if they did things a certain way. The ending leaves things bitter sweet, having the rest of the fictional town to discover the dogs possessed evil killings.
A novel published in February, 1974 Peter Bencley. The novel had a movie adaptation released in theaters June 20th, 1975. The movie has a rather simple plot however during watching you can feel the the nonstop suspense throughout the entire movie. What made it on the top list is the impact this movie had on the world after it. This film influenced other movie creators to have bigger budgets, and to take advantage of summer openings. The most iconic death in the film was the little boy being eaten by his and watching it again made realize of how much this film (and its many spin offs) are referenced in other stories as well.
Stephen King's novel "Carrie" was published April 5, 1974. The novel soon had a movie and a remake to that movie years later. A thriller following a 16 old year old, Carietta "Carrie" White. The lead is abused at school and at home from her mother. Throughout her entire life her mother believed everyone was of sin expect her, and because Carrie was the only one around she was often abused for sinning or possibly sinning. We believe this novel converted into a movie should be added to the list because it keeps the audience on their toes the entire movie and it leads us in thinking or protagonist will eventually catch a break . For example the novel set us up for a good ending, she goes to prom and in like most teenage movie you would expect her to realize her self worth in the end not to kill most of her town and then self. This horror novel took a huge leap and that is why we admire the movie so much.
