Mahi Mahi is a fish caught for food or game. Most of the time they're caught with trawling lures. The population for Mahi Mahi is at a stable point.
Mahi Mahi is used in many fish dishes. It sells for about 13 dollars a pound. Mahi Mahi is a common fish to catch and use in food.
Trawling nets drag along the bottom of the ocean destroying the plant life there. Along with that it catches fish that aren't wanted. This puts those species endangered because of the over fishing.
When fishing for a certain fish, it isn't as easy as it sounds. On the info graphic above it shows that for every one pound of fish you want, ten pounds of by-catch is caught. This is a perfect example of why trawling can lead to the endangerment of a species.
The trawling fishing method catches unwanted fish, destroys corals, sponges, and sea grass. The unwanted fish are thrown back sometimes but the fish have died from this fishing. This is being observed by on-board fishery observers.
Trawling is now under marine conservation debate. It is being examined on how it impacts the bottom of the ocean. Organizations want to switch to less destructive methods of fishing.
O’Connor MP Rick Wilson wants to remove zone permitting for trawling at Bremer Bay. Bremer Bay is a marine reserve area. He is concerned on how trawling can damage the area. This would be very sustainable for the environment there because it would allow it to thrive without the risk of trawling. However it may impact the economy because it would restrict that area of fishing not allowing fishers to go and fish. This was brought because O'Connor was concerned for the bay. This goes to show the kind of impact trawling can have on the environment and the economy. So can we make trawling safer or switch to a better alternative?
Forest & Bird are saying that trawling nets are dangerous. They have discovered that sea lions are being killed by squid trawling nets. They want a way to make fishing safer for sea lions. This is unsustainable for the ecosystem. It is killing sea lions off which can throw the food chain off. This could lead to overpopulation. This is an example of how other fish can easily get caught in a trawling net. Forest and bird want to switch to jigging which is a safer method of trawling for sea lions. Something we should do for all trawling methods.
One way to save the environment is to have closed areas. This would help areas in the future from being destroyed. Also this would protect endangered species, rebuild stocks, and prevent over fishing.
Sharks are usually caught as by-catch by trawling nets. The use of hyper spectral scanning which detects sonar waves. This can help by identifying sharks from a distance away. This can also be used for other fish as well.
Mahi Mahi are doing fine as of now. However, other fish in the area may not be. So if we can make trawling safer/better or switch to a better alternative, we can reduce by catch and have a sustainable fishing method.
