When the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, over 40,000 people were instantly killed on impact for both bombs. This changed the way I looked at the war. We hated the fact that so many innocent civilians were being killed, but we had to make a decision that would cause that to occur.
Penicillin was introduced in the 1940s and is still frequently used today. Personally I do not take this medicine, but it has helped someone very close to me. Penicillin opened up the era of antibiotics, giving us great advances in medicine.
The Dust Bowl was in the southern Plain region of the United States. It effected our nation because it was severe winds and choking dust from Texas to Nebraska. The dust bowl did not only kill crops, but it killed people too. This event connects to present day because it helps us prevent a situation like this from occurring again. Learning about the Dust Bowl also helped me realize how their dying crops strongly impacted their economy and it was very hard to fix.
Jackie Robinson had a huge impact on our nation. He was the first black athlete to play major league baseball. If he had never been allowed to play, who knows if things would look the way they do today. I personally find it crazy that because of a skin color people couldn't play baseball, but it's nice to know that things have gotten better.
The Oreo Cookie was created in 1912, but it has only gotten more and more popular and to this day is one of the most popular cookies out there. It is not just something incredibly popular in my household, but across the nation.
Mickey Mouse is one of the most popular, well known cartoons in America. The first short Mickey Mouse film to become popular premiered in 1928 and to this day, Mickey Mouse has grown over television, books, and stuffed animals. For me, I've learned about Mickey Mouse from school and at home. It's very unbelievable to live in America and not know who Mickey Mouse is.
Henry Ford's assembly line reduced the amount of time it took to build a car from more than 12 hours. His invention of the Model T was amazing, but he wanted to aim higher and his car inventions only got better. Now to this day, we still use the assembly line, just a more advanced version.
The Titanic was a tragedy that helped us learn from our mistakes, so we could build safer and better ships today. It was also a tragedy that killed about 1,500 people. Learning from this tragedy has helped me realize that just because you think you've done everything perfectly and it all looks good, doesn't mean nothing can go wrong.
The Great Depression started when there was a crash in our stock market in 1929, sending our nation into a panic. Over the next several years, there were about 15 million unemployed Americans, nearly half the countries banks were failing, and many failed companies as well. It has helped us today so we now know what to do or how to help ourselves recover. I find it scary that our nation had it so bad for several years, but there were ways to recover from such a tragedy.
Unfortunately, women had to wear ridiculous and uncomfortable clothes just so they could be "fitting" to society. Luckily, we had women start abandoning the trends of those clothes and break out into more freedom with their clothing choices. Having those women change our social freedoms back then have allowed us to continue growing our freedoms as women today. I know that there are still things we need to change and luckily we had women back then in 1914 who were going to wear what they wanted and try new things like a blouse.
