Was Stalin a saviour of the USSR?

Soviet Education

Soviet Education

The source shows that Stalin was trying to create the "New Soviet Man" through education. He encouraged people to take up subjects that would contribute to the country and industries, rather than for their own interest. I chose this source as it shows how Stalin changed the education system. The source shows that Stalin has helped USSR in as he pushed the system to be one of the best at that time, and increased the number of schools such that the people could be more intellectual instead of working all day.

Stalin's Purges Video - Joseph Stalin - HISTORY.com

Stalin's Purges Video - Joseph Stalin - HISTORY.com

The video shows that millions of people were killed through his purges and show trials. He thought that there was many opposition in the government and army, but it was all only part of his imagination. He lost many high ranking and experienced officers, who were replaced by young and inexperienced ones. This cause them to suffer terribly when the Nazis invaded. I chose this source as it reflects how the purges has affected USSR. The source shows that Stalin's paranoid caused him to lose valuable people and thus allowed millions to die when the Nazis invaded them, thus he was not a saviour of USSR but more of a killer.

Propaganda

Propaganda

The image shows an articles from Pravda, the official newspaper for the Soviet Union. It is promoting that people are living happily under Stalin's rule, espicially children, and even calls Stalin their "best friend". I chose this source as it shows how Stalin made use of the newspaper for his propaganda and promoted himself to be a very likable person. This shows that Stalin was not beneficial to USSR as he lied to people so that he had their support but does not present facts.

Stalin by Survivor : Aron's Story (The Graphic Novel)

The video shows that the people living in USSR were in constant fear as anything that they do that would look slightly wrong, they would be arrested and become slaves. I chose this source because its by a man who has experienced Stalin's rule firsthand. It shows that people living under Stalin's rule found no peace and had to be very careful about what they did or say, thus Stalin was not beneficial.

Starving kid in USSR

Starving kid in USSR

This picture shows a kid who was in the Great Famine and did not have anything to eat, she is clearly unhappy with the situation created by Stalin. I chose this source because it shows that Stalin did not concern himself with the well-being of his people but cared more about his own goals. This suffering of the girl shows that Stalin could not care more about the Great Famine and thus did not benefit the country or its people.

Great Terror

Great Terror

This cartoon shows many piles of skulls which belongs to the people Stalin has killed. It shows that Stalin has killed many through purges and show trials to inflict fear in people and also to gain control of the government. I chose this source because it reflects the number of people Stalin has killed. The expression and action of Stalin shows that he did not really care about the people he killed, and thus he was not a saviour of USSR.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Stalin was not a saviour of USSR as he killed many of his own people, be it through starvation of purges. As a ruler he should be helping his people too but instead he focused on the benefits of the country. He caused people to live in fear and used propaganda to promote himself by hiding some facts and introducing lies. He built more schools and made USSR’s education system one of the best, but he aimed at brainwashing the people into believing in him and doing what he says. He used the schools to increase his support and also encourage the students to take up subjects like maths and science which will help the industries instead of literature and other similar subjects which may result in oppostion.
