This political cartoon shows people experienced famine. The source shows Stalin, bigger than the people which are also peasants, with a full meal in front of him while the people, being powerless, have nothing to eat at all. This shows that people starved, and they could not ask for any too. Based on contextual knowledge, these peasants such as farmers had their crops and produce taken away forcibly too, leaving no food for themselves at all. Thus, it shows that the people suffered famine. I chose this source as it shows how the peasants were treated, without food, without water, while Stalin could afford a full meal to himself. This source shows that he did not benefit USSR as the people starved, even to death.
This pictorial cartoon shows that people lived in fear. As seen in the source, Stalin is the cat while people are the mouses, and cats are predators while mouses are prey. This emphasizes that people were scared of Stalin. It also shows that Stalin is going to eat the mouse, showing that people were probably fearful of getting killed and always had to be aware of themselves as well as their surroundings as they knew they were being watched. The mouse hole in the source is stuffed with material, disallowing the mouse to escape. This also shows that the people had no way to escape Stalin and his officials. I chose this source as it shows that the people were powerless compared to Stalin and were very fearful. This source shows that Stalin's rule did not benefit USSR as they all lived in fear.
This source shows the living condition of people during Stalin's rule. As seen in the photo, many people are cramped and living in a room with only a few beds despite having to fit 10 people. There is barely any space to let them walk around and there is limited facilities. Based on contextual knowledge, they had almost no running water or proper sanitation, and this would affect their health immensely. I chose this source as it shows how bad the living conditions were under Stalin. This source shows that Stalin's rule did not benefit USSR as they lived in bad conditions.
This poster source shows Stalin holding a baby with the caption ( translated ) : Stalin's gentleness shines on our future children. It is trying to convince people that he is a kind, approachable and father-like figure that can benefit the future generations for USSR. The baby is holding a flag that shows she supports Stalin and is smiling brightly, also showing that Stalin's rule will bring about happiness to people. I chose this source as it shows how great Stalin is, in contrast to his evil doings such as purges and mass executions, showing that it is propaganda material. This source would show that Stalin benefits USSR as he benefits the future citizens even though it is propaganda.
This political cartoon source shows a pile of dead people with Stalin standing on top of them holding an axe. This implies that he conducted mass executions of workers and innocent people such as scientists and engineers. I can also tell from the source that he showed no mercy while killing all these people, as seen from his expression of happiness instead of guilt. I chose this source as it emphasizes the extreme number of people he has killed and can show what kind of person he was. This shows that he did not benefit USSR as many died, which in turn decreased the country's quality in many aspects
This video explains the happenings of the purge. It tells us that Stalin set quotas for the number of people to be killed, and even increased the number later on. He also shot every present member of the Politburo mercilessly, counting them down one by one. Anyone could be arrested and eventually killed. The man in the video refused to sign a statement and was punished by standing for 5 whole days, causing his legs to be swollen. This shows that tons of people were affected, hurt, killed by the purge started by Stalin. I chose this source as it tells many things about what happened during the purge. The source shows that Stalin's rule did not benefit for USSR as many people were executed even if they did nothing wrong.
Stalin was not a saviour of USSR. Even though he has made small efforts to improve USSR, there are more bad things that he has done. He has ruined the people's lives with purges, show trials, causing their living conditions to be bad, making them live in constant fear, live in starvation and so much more. He has made many mistakes too, bringing the USSR down in many aspects such as military, goods and management. There are a lot more negative sides than positive sides to his rule, which is why I think he is not a savior. He showed no concern at all to his people, harming even innocent people. Thus, in conclusion, he is not a savior of the USSR.
