This picture showws women working during Stalin's rule. This source was chosen as it shws women entering the workforce and doing their part for the economy. In the past, the role of a women was to take care of their house by doing house chores, cooking etc. and women did not have much freedom to make their own decision .However, after Stalin came into power women were allowed to have more control over their own lives without interference from their husbands and they were allowed to enter the workforce. All in all they guaranteed equal rights to women. The reason behind why women were welcomed into the workforce as Stalin wanted them to be productive members of the economy, hoping that their entrance into the workforce would help the economy to grow and expand. For the women, this simply means that they would have to fulfill both duties as a worker and a house wife, making their lives tougher.Although child care services were provided, such services were poorly maintained as stalin simply only wants women to contribute to the economy and did not care about the welfare of their children. Hence, this simply shows that Stalin's rule did not benefit the USSR.
This picture shows the living condition of the people under Stalin's rule. I chose this picture as it shows the terrible and cramp condition in the house. There was an increasing population in the city which made the shortage housing an even grater problem.People were not allowed to have their own property as it all belongs to the state. The state controlled where the citizens would live in. Many were forced to live in overcrowded and cramp houses with no proper sanitation or running water.People were forced to work for long hours, with little time off and they were forced to live under poor housing conditions. They were also not fairly paid for their efforts. Stalin focused a lot on focused a lot on rapid industrialization and neglected the welfare of the people or rather he did not care at all. Therefore, Stalin's rule was not beneficial for USSR as he did not care about the welfare of the people.
This article talks about the Soviet Union’s ‘Great Famine’ that happened between 1932 and 1933.This source was chosen as it talks about how people suffered during the great famine and it also talks about the cause of this famine. This famine resulted in the death of 9 million people. This famine was a man-made affair. As Stalin did not trust that the peasants would obey his orders and support his government,he wanted to get rid of them.Hence he ordered secret police and troops to take away whatever food they could find and simply left the rural villages with none. The state sold the grain overseas to raise funds for more industrial machinery and development.Hence this shows that Stalin's rule did not benefit the USSR as this 'man-made' famine was created to get rid of the peasants.
This video shows life in the concentration camps and how people were suffering and being treated.I chose this video as it shows how bad people were treated in the camp.Only a few lucky ones would be able to survive after being tortured in the camps.People were either executed or being tortured brutally. As seen in the video, they were not well fed and many of them were malnourished and skinny. The secret police would force those captured ones to confess on crimes they did not commit and they would questioned and forced them to inform against their friends and family who voiced opposition against Stalin.Once arrested, even if they were innocent, had no rights to protest their incarceration and there was no access to a fair trial. This does not show that Stalin's rule was beneficial for USSR as there was no justice and Soviet citizens during Stalin's rule lived in constant fear of arrest, interrogation, and imprisonment.
This article talks about the people whom Stalin had a great purge on and how he got rid of people who he found was a threat to his leadership. I chose this source as it shows how brutal Stalin was and how miserable life was under his rule.He killed high ranking commanders, thousands of red army officers, and many more who he afraid would overthrow the government. He also killed many intellectual, skilled workers and officers. These resulted in a loss of able leaders and intellectuals. He was merciless and brutal when it came to executing and getting rid of people who he found was standing in his way. Many were thrown into working camps and being forced to live in an inhumane conditions. He instilled fear and terror among the people. This shows that Stalin's rule was not beneficial for USSR as people lived in fear and terror and there was a huge lost of able leaders and intellectuals .
This political cartoon shows a picture of Stalin holding on to a bucket of paint labelled "RED PROPAGANDA" and pouring it on what seems like a globe. Propaganda was in favour of him and was being spread across the whole of USSR.I chose this source as it shows that Stalin uses propaganda to gain support and brain wash people. He uses propaganda extensively to build up his own profile as the rightful successor of Lenin. He was in total control of the propaganda and he controlled what was being published and displayed. All the books, films, posters and more were all in favour of Stalin, potraying him as a saviour of the USSR and a good leader. Therefore this clearly shows that Stalin's rule was not beneficial for the USSR as people did not have the freedom to express their thoughts and views .
Many innocent people were killed under Stalin's rule. Stalin was very focused with building up the economy and neglected the welfare of his people. Although under Stalin's rule, there was an improvement in areas like the economy, many lives were taken away.Stalin uses violence and brutality to gain power and to instill fear and terror among the people. In order for him to implement measures easily and effectively,he wanted people to be scared of him so that they will obey his order. Under his rule, there was no freedom and the standards of living fell, people were not allowed to have their own property, people lost their freedom to express themselves as he was in total control of propaganda and many people were being totured and executed.Hence,in conclusion Stalin was not a saviour of USSR.
