This photo shows the construction of Magnitogorsk , an industrial city that was part of Stalin's 5 year plan.Magnitogorsk was to become a one-industry town, with producing iron and steel in mind. I chose this photo as it shows the scale and ferocity of the rapid industrialisation of USSR. It also shows the success of Stalin's goal , which is to make USSR a powerhouse with it's economy, advancement in technology and arms industry. This photo shows that Stalin's 5 year plan was a success , despite having it's problems. The scale of production for iron and steel was rapid , and boosted the arms industry and ultimately the power of the USSR and that Stalin's rule was beneficial for the USSR.
This political cartoon shows Stalin's officials standing trial admitting guilt with sarcasm to making Stalin happy. I chose this source as it depicts the show trails very well. People were being forced to confess to crimes that they did not do by Stalin. People standing trail often have their family memebers being tortured or killed before they 'confess' to their crimes. This shows that Stalin's rule struck fear into everyone and everyone told him what he wanted to hear , even if they did not oppose or do anything illegal. This shows that Stalin's rule was not beneficial for USSR
This video shows Stalin's plan for the industrialization of Russia. This plan for industrialization was part of his 5 year plan. The video shows that Stalin's 5 year plan demanded heavy industrialization , focusing on iron , steel , coal and oil . They were building new equipment and technologies for the USSR. I have chosen this source because it shows the industrialization of USSR and its success. The video shows workers working to build factories and equipment . When the factories were built finished , the nearby towns got improvements in facilities and amenities . Towns got cinemas , shops were stocked with reasonable prices , cars were seen on the roads etc . This shows that the rapid industrialization worked and the economy was growing. Under Stalin's rule , the industrialization gave workers jobs and the economy a boost . There was little unemployment and transport , equipments , facilities were vastly improved . This shows that Stalin's rule was beneficial for the USSR.
This video talks about Stalin's purges he conducted on his people and staff. People were living in fear and large numbers of people were executed. I chose this source as it shows the atrocity that Stalin has done. Stalin was paranoid and assumed that many in his government and army opposed him. However , this was all just in his head, and through the purge, he lost many high ranking and experienced officers. These positions were then replaced by young officers who had little to no experience. This left USSR highly vulnerable. This shows that Stalin's rule was not beneficial for the USSR.
This political cartoon shows Stalin whipping a farmer , and text that roughly translate into ' Peasant ! Stalin makes you a slave.' I chose this source as it shows the brutality of Stalin. This shows that Stalin's plan for people in each village to voluntarily unite their farms into one collective farm also known as 'kolkhoz' was a failure . He tried to enforce this policy in 1927. After two years, when everyone had ignored his idea and there had been a famine, Stalin made collectivisation compulsory. However , the peasants were not happy and would rather burned their crops and killed their animals rather than hand them over to the state. This resulted in another famine in 1930. In 1931 he tried to enforce the policy again and this resulted in a worse famine. Because of the resistance , Stalin declared war on the farmers and peasants . Many people died as a result of this . This shows that Stalin did not care about the concerns that the farmers had and forced them to work for Stalin in the end, which also shows that Stalin's rule was not beneficial for the USSR.
This photo shows people getting executed by USSR soldiers. I chose this source as this shows the power that Stalin had and the heartless nature of Stalin. There were secret police among civilians and arrested and killed anyone who was reported for opposing Stalin. And to have soldiers killing innocents in such a massive scale shows that Stalin had alot of power and striked fear into people's hearts. Killing innocents is how Stalin held his power and showed anyone who opposed him will die. This shows that Stalin's rule was not beneficial for the USSR.
Stalin may have led USSR into the industrial age , however it costed millions of lives . Innocent people , workers and farmers murdered directly or indirectly . Stalin did not care about his people and only wanted to serve his own needs. He was paranoid and did not trust many people and officials around him. People in USSR were living in fear and they were not happy at all. He did not consider the well being of his people. The negatives outweigh the positives . Hence I can conclude that Stalin was not a saviour of the USSR.
