This source shows people living in poor condition. I chose this source because it shows the poor condition their living in. This shows that they face shortage of good housing for workers. The increasing population in cities has made the shortage of housing a bigger problem. They were controlled by the state so they cannot build houses or purchase land. So, they are forced to live in cramp places without proper sanitation.
This source shows the amount of people and animals die from starvation. I chose this source because it shows how many people have been starved and the pictures shows how skinny the people are and horses lying on the ground and their bones can be seen. This shows that farmers could not keep produce for themselves because the state was controlled the use of agriculture produce from collective farms. Even though they want to hide their produce, they will be taken by party officials. Hence, there were 6 million people involve in starvation due to shortage of food.
The source shows a Stalin as a spider. I chose this source because spiders is known to be one of people's fear. In this source, Stalin is represented as a spider because people fear Stalin. Fear became an aspect of everyone life in soviet union under Stalin. Indications of anti stalin sentiments could warrant an arrest because there were secret police had informers everywhere. People knew that they were constantly watched by stalin officials so they did not feel a sense of freedom. If they were judged poorly, it would be difficult for them to apply for work. If they did some wrong doing, they would be sent to labour camp or even killed.
The five year plan helped to propel the soviet union forward to become an industrial base for powerful arms industry by 1941. However, there was little growth in consumer industries. This plan was marked by poor coordination and planning. The economy faced underproduction because of the shortage of materials but some factories overproduced to attempt exceeding their target. This shows there were inbalance supply of materials. The quality of product was potentially hazardous. For 2nd and 5th year, they focus on development of heavy industries. I chose this source because the video illustrate clearly about the five year plan.
The source shows a shock worker. I chose this source as the caption reads "Workers of the world protect the socialist fatherland." The caption explain about how the workers felt. This source is trying to explain the Five Year plan rapidly industrialise the Soviet Union. The factories in cities would provide mechanisation of farming such as tractors in the previous source. With such equiptments, fewer farm workers would would be needed and they can go to cities to become factory workers. More food will be produced to supply the cities and factories. There was emphasis on development of heavy industries such as coal. The working hours of factory workers were fixed.
This source shows farmers using tractors to gather food. Stalin merge the individual farms of Soviet Union into collective farms. Big area of land could be farmed more efficiently through mechanisation such as tractors in the photo above. This shows that this is one of the ways how people get food. Therefore, this shows that the Soviet agriculture production improved. I chose this source because it shows the mechanics used to get food.
I do not think that Stalin is a saviour of USSR. This is because he did not help the people and they die from starvation, lived in fear and famine. Many people were killed due to his irresponsible leadership. There were alot of negative impacts and people suffered and were affected badly so he is not a saviour.
