School isn’t teaching us critical thinking, rather they set us up to think passively. We are under the mindset of “how do I get an A on this paper?” versus “How do I create an excellent essay?” It’s the difference between focusing on the input versus thinking about output… and school makes you focus on outputs. This can harm you in life as you would be more likely to make emotional and irrational decisions, be manipulated by others, and severely hurt your creativity if you follow the output oriented goals of our schooling systems.
Reactions from elementary to high school have very different mindsets brought to them through school and economic pressures. They aren’t teaching kids to explore new ideas but instead get a narrowed educational path. There are multiple different types of intelligence and Eddy Zhong proved this as a straight C student starting his own technology company at age 16 that was mentioned in the wall street journal, doing better than some companies made from Stanford and Harvard Graduates.
The “Modern” School System is failing based on many different factors. The best evidence is destroying creativity, rewarding the wrong values, and most of it is a waste of time. This article explains how many successful people don’t do well in school and how the ideas that are instilled to you in school are not beneficial for the real world. Another big argument is how school only attends to a certain style of intelligence, leaving out all other applicable and common forms.
This website explains some of the big advantages of online learning. Part is transferring credits, another is universal learning where, as well as it brings up how it costs less so you can get a good education even if you are not wealthy. With a lower cost and being easier to access and attend classes the more net education we’ll see people having with more and more people starting to do it.
This is a new example of what is being tried out. Khan Academy is an online school that teaches kids at their own pace and has a variety of free subjects that anyone can benefit from. This is what is being predicted to be the future of teaching: easy online courses that move at your own pace and allow you to study what you want to study.
Part 2 of "How to Create an Absolutely Broken School System" -- reason the description was so long before
School system was created by model of Prussians’ during the industrial revolution. However, prussians used the school to enforce obedience and brainwash citizens. The reason this system was enforced was because under the right hands it could flourish, and during the industrial era it did just that. But we’re not in the industrial era anymore, now that we’ve moved on to the information era the flaws in school are starting to cause serious concern. The schools are focusing more on quantity instead of quality, not caring about mastery but allowing you to pass with more than a 60% understanding to pass. It also stifles creativity - something that is becoming arguably more important than ever. These are the strongest reasons, but countless others still exist, and it shows that we need to move our education systems to something more practical in preparing ourselves for our new era.
