A Calgary grocer is ready to pull the plug on single-use plastic bags in the new year. By replacing plastic shopping bags with 100 per cent biodegradable ones and a bring-your-own-bag incentive program, Calgary Co-op intends to phase out the single-use plastic bags from food store locations by Jan. 1. The company removed conventional plastic bags from its liquor stores and gas stations shortly after a successful launch of 10 cent biodegradable bags.
The new retail market will help support over 70 local family-owned businesses and create more than 200 jobs, according to the Calgary Farmers' Market. The location is located in Greenwich in the city’s northwest.
SaskTel employees from the neighbouring headquarters building were a major source of customers at the food court, especially in the morning and the lunch rush on weekdays. SaskTel also has a store inside the mall. Now, with workers off the job for 13 days under what began as a strike and is now viewed by the union as a lockout, every food court restaurateur who spoke to the Leader-Post reported a painful drop in sales.
