This is an article about the St. Louis, the boat that Josef's story was based off of. There were about 937 Jews on the boat all fleeing Germany to get to Cuba. Their need of safety and wanting to protect their families are what caused them to get on this boat.
Pictured above are Europeans forcing Africans into building a bridge. This shows one of the main motives for imperialism which is economic. The Europeans wanted cheap labor and natural resources and they knew they could get that by invading Africa. They were motivated by selfish reasons.

Refugee by Alan Gratz is the stories of three different refugee families and their pain-staking journeys. One family from Germany during the Holocaust, one from Syria, and one from Cuba. The novel is fast paced and heartbreaking. Gratz writes it in a way that connects all of the refugees stories although, they are very different. All of the separate families were motivated by family and safety.
