The article “What happens to your brain when you stop reading” and “Farenhite 451” both contain dystopian elements of technological control. In “Farenhite 451”Mildred is obsessed with technology along with the majority of the rest of the population largely due to the fact that they have no books to read. “Reading plays a major part in stimulating cognitive activity”. And since people can’t read, they resort to other things to keep them occupied. Like Mildred uses “seashell ear thimbles” 24/7 because she has never read so her cognitive thinking skills are really just not there at all. Her whole life revolves around technology and she spends all of her time immersed in it. This is causing her “relationship”with Montag to suffer. When people stop reading or don’t read at all, they often feel “feel something is missing”. Montag is beginning to feel something missing from his life. After talking with the girl he realizes that “He was not happy“. His lack of reading very well may be the reason for this feeling and him stealing a book may make him realize that reading is the missing piece in life. Technology is controlling people’s life. It is controlling what they think and how they think. The people in this story need reading to save them from the mindless control of technology.
