In this movie, 5 teenagers are stuck in detention, Allison, John, Claire, Brian, and Andrew. Together they try and find a way to make their Saturday enjoyable. In doing so they discover that they're not that much different from each other, much like in a democracy. In a democracy all people share common issues and experiences which overall help the people make the society better.
Despite it not being the most appealing aspect of democracy, the reality is exactly that. With most democratic societies there is often a divide economically. People who are in say a lower class tend to stay there with little room for improvement similarly to the upper classes. Even though equity or even equality be would ideal, its nearly impossible to have both a functioning democratic system and equal opportunity for all simultaneously. The top 1% in America hold 40% of the Nations wealth, where as the bottom 80% of Americans hold only 7% between them. These statistics have only increasingly gotten worse over the last 20-30 years.
People of different backgrounds coming around to help the common wellbeing of others regardless of socioeconomic status or ethnicity. This is an example of democracy because its an instance of people joining forces in order to help the oppressed and make a change in an unjust system of government.
When people think of a democracy they think of the freedoms that a human should have like Freedom of Speech. This can easily be misconstrued by the government, like Trump for instance. With the president devaluing any other form of media that doesn't directly agree with his interests. This could be the beginning of what will take the form of harsher censorship of all new sites and other media platforms. Freedom of Speech by definition is the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint. The government just like in certain countries don't allow people to say such things with that freedom. Without the ability for people to say how they're feeling and what they believe should be done, there can't be any democracy or any way to help the people.
This shows democracy between Kat and her sister Bianca but also with the other characters like Patrick, Cameron, Joey, and Walter. All of the characters make deals with one another to get what they want. Cameron asks Joey to be a backer and in turn pay Patrick to take Kat out so Joey/Cameron can take out Bianca. All have reached a compromise with another character and in the end worked out for the majority of the people. Democracy is to help the majority of the people not just those who are within an inner circle.
Even with opposing views, a democracy is supposed to stay together and figure out what needs to be done for the better of the community.
When democracy works, people will work together and persevere through the hard times. The ultimate goal of a democracy is to help everyone out because the weakest link is just as strong as the whole chain.
