The comic shows Hitler commanding a cow that has eaten a lot of other countries. It also has a caption that reads "The head eats, the rest gets milked." This suggests that Hitler is quickly taking over and conquering other countries and using the resources from those countries to continue taking over the world as shown by him milking the cow. This would lead to Hitler trying to take over the European countries, causing war as a result. I chose this source as it clearly depicts Hitler attempting to take over as many countries as possible. In this source, Hitler is responsible for the war in Europe.
The video talks about the many weaknesses of the League of Nations. The main weaknesses of the League of Nations is that the League had no military capabilities as no countries were willing to help. This resulted in poor control as the League had no power to enforce its laws on peace and countries could easily break the rules with no punishment. This allowed expanding countries like Germany and Russia to quickly expand. The European countries like Britain and France also underestimated Germany and hence allowed Germany a lot of leeway. This allowed Germany to quickly take over many territories and hence start the war in Europe. I chose this video as it states the weaknesses of the League of Nations. Hence, the European Democracies are responsible for the war in Europe.
The main point of this picture is that Germany lost a lot of territory in the Treaty of Versailles. This led to anger among the Germans as Germany was forced to accept and sign the Treaty without having a say in the Treaty. The fact that the European victors, Italy and France, together with Britain tried to cripple Germany as much as possible such that Germany could not recover adds on to the rage that Germany have. This explains and leads to the undying rage of Hitler to seek "revenge" on the European countries by deliberately expanding and trying to take over the world. I chose this source as it clearly shows the huge territory loss that Germany suffered. Even though Hitler was the one that lead Germany to war, it could have been avoided if not for the unfairness of the Treaty of Versailles. Therefore, in this source the European Democracies are responsible for the war in Europe.
The video talks about the various aims of Hitler after he became chancellor. The main points include to restore formal glory to Germany, expanding Germany and to gain new territory. Hitler's determination to conquer the "world" made him take over many other non-European countries such as Poland and Czechoslovakia to benefit militarily and economically. This also results to Hitler's attempt to take over European countries, hence declaring war and starting war in Europe. I chose this source as it explicitly tells me the various goals that Hitler had that eventually led to war. From this source, Hitler was responsible for war in Europe.
The picture shows a women feeling embarrassed sitting on a bench that labels "Only For Jews". This also can be seen by the women covering her face when the picture was taken. The key idea of the picture is to show that anti-semitism was a major issue in Germany, and this can be linked to the fact that fascist dictatorships like Germany were increasing in power by using extreme ideologies, like antisemitism in this case. Hitler exploits the fears in citizens by using Jews as a scapegoat to garner support and to increase in power as well as calling Germans the "pure Aryan race" that classifies any other race as inferior, which in turns allows Hitler to rise to power and eventually leading to war. I chose this picture as this picture shows the extent of racial discrimination and fascism in Germany that contributed to war in Europe. In this case, Hitler was responsible for the war in Europe.
The key points of this cartoon is that the European leaders were seen as useless in preventing war from breaking out. This can be seen by the pathway made by the various leaders with a label showing "Spineless Leaders of Democracy". This is linked to the policy of appeasement as the European leaders allowed Hitler to do whatever he pleases without care. Not only did it not help stop Hitler from rising to power, it even assisted Hitler to rise to glory. I chose this source as it is a clear representation of the failures of the European Democracies. Even though Hitler was the main antagonist in the War, it could be prevented if not for the failure of the European Democracies. Hence, the European Democracies are responsible for war in Europe.
In conclusion, I feel that European Democracies were responsible for the war outbreak in Europe during World War 2. Even though Hitler, together with his antisemitic and fascist ideas as well as the rapid expansion, did contribute to the outbreak of war in Europe, it could have been all prevented if not for the ignorance and laziness of the European Democracies when it came to dealing with Hitler and his rapidly expanding Germany. Appeasement and the uselessness of the League of Nation made it extremely easy for Hitler to rise to power and it is the European Democracies' fault for not properly dealing with that problem. Therefore, the European Democracies are mainly responsible for the war in Europe.
