An important week in criminal justice with the headline event the publication of the long awaited Female Offenders Strategy which prioritises diversion and abandoned the plan for new community prisons in favour of residential centres. Although warmly received in principle, several commentators noted that the strategy seems to be under-funded.
Elsewhere, Rory Stewart spoke frankly to the Justice Committee where he said he wanted to cut the prison population but thought that it would increase by 5,000 over the next four years.
