Being a Responsible Consumer as a Teenager

It is important to be a responsible consumer because you don't want to buy clothes from companies that get their items from factories or work spaces that treat their workers with no fair working conditions or human rights. By buying from these companies you would be supporting unfair justices to workers. Supporting these companies would only make the working conditions worse and worse for these workers. Teenagers should care about the garments they purchase because it is important to know how these garments were made. These garments may have been made by workers who were forced to work overtime and didn't get paid enough. It is also important to purchase garments that have the best effect on the economy, world, and everybody involved.

Overview Summary: Working Conditions

Overall, most of these workers suffered from lack of human rights they were not given. For example not being paid when forced to work overtime, receiving low salaries, little to no breaks, no health insurance or benefits, and no attention to safety. These workers work long hours and get paid very little and get no respect or say.

In Saudi Arabia workers are treated with ruthless working conditions, sexual violence and their human rights have been abused. Many migrant workers are working fourteen to eighteen hours a day without being paid. Women migrant workers were raped and abused by male employees, this disturbed them for the rest of their lives and would get very emotional when talking about this. These women were struggling working 12 hours a day with low pay, no food, and no breaks. Many workers who were abused or have crucial working conditions, went to trial in the criminal justice system but were also treated unfairly there too. The judges either didn't care to hear what they had to say or they would just deny them.This article is significant because it elaborates how migrant workers are abused.This tragedy has been happening for many years and continues to happen in the present.These working conditions impact human rights. Mistreated workers would call their experience in Saudi Arabia a “bad dream.”

Some children in Nepal had were forced o be sold to work, in order to pay off debts from their family. This practice is now banned which has reduced child labor, but is still being taken place. Child labor also happens because of family traditions, some of these children are born into working through family, forced to work at a young age. These children receive no education and harsh rules. Child labor in Nepal has been an ongoing issue with increasing awareness in recent years.This impacts social well being and future of these children as well as of the entire nation and calls for attention from national and global organizations.

Though these garment workers have horrible working conditions like making money, garment workers barely get paid. Most have to get loans to cover expenses but have a hard time paying them back. Another unfair working condition is how workers are supposed to do tasks that are not possible for them to do. These garment workers also are forced to work overtime, and they are not paid for the extra hours they work. Lastly, expectations are high in the workplace. Tiny mistakes and you'll be threatened to be fired or punished. This happened during the garment industry growth around 2009. This article is significant because this reminds us of what goes down behind the scenes. We receive imports from factories like these. These workers are facing the wrath of bad working conditions, but have a lot of pressure on them as the garment industry is very important to India.

The garment industry in China is growing quickly, and their workforce is mostly created by migrant workers. These migrant workers try to find a way out of poverty but end up with miserable working conditions.The average salary a month for migrant workers is one hundred ninety- seven US dollars. Working a full week and forced overtime. Along with bad working conditions these workers also have bad living conditions, as they usually live in small dorms with 6 people.Many injuries and sometimes deaths come from the work space. Workers would die from the practices of sandblasting that later got banned, but is still taking place. This has been happening for the past years. This article is significant by the untold truth about these workers lives, and impacts our lives of how items we buy had to go through.The companies that these migrant workers have died from find a way to not be blamed for these deaths. Organizations are working to empower migrant workers for a better future.

Chinese factory workers have horrible working conditions. Four people investigated in this by going to different toy factories in china. They figured out that these Chinese toy factory workers were living in small filthy dorms with one room up to 10 people. Per month toy factory workers work forty-four to one hundred and thirty-nine more hours than the Chinese labor department allows. These workers were not safety trained, which is required and the work space is unsafe for workers because they were not given any safety equipment. These workers are suffering from tight schedules and are not given and sick days, and if they do take a sick day they usually get fired. This has being going on in the present-day. It is significant because the items workers make come from popular companies that look joyful on the outside. This video impacts our choices when buying from different brands.These workers suffer from hard schedules and sweat too much for the miserable treatments they are given.

Advice to Teenagers

They should be mindful of environmental cost of manufacturing and distributing new clothes, and should purchase clothes that can be refurbished and be resold.

They should avoid temptation of purchasing fast fashion clothes and look at real value, quality of clothes, aim for long lasting garments.

Teenagers should shop in charity shops, thrift shops and participate in clothes swapping to help reduce waste, decrease demand of underpaid garment workers.
