My example of film is a movie that took place during World War II in which a boy named Bruno moved with his family to Berlin and took up residence near a concentration camp where his father become a commandant. Lonely and curious, he began to explore and met a jewish boy named Shmuel who lived in the camps. This film told a story in which many people were affected by the war even the germans. The story in this film was created by John Boyne who was an irish novelist. I was really moved by this movie because Bruno who was the son of a commandant died trying to form a forbidden friendship with the boy living in the concentration camp. This movie also reveals the horrid living conditions of the people in the concentration camps. It had given people a perspective of both worlds during World War II and gave people a sense of empathy for the story of the young boy. My understanding of this conflict is deepened because it helped me gain a perspective of what it was like to be jewish during WWII. My example of a speech is a speech given by Franklin D. Roosevelt 1941 to a joint session of congress, asking for a declaration of war against Japan after the occurrence of the Pearl Harbor attack. This speech contains reasons for why FDR wanted to declare a declaration of war against Japan and what he believes to be the reason why the Japanese government decided to attack America. He also states the devastations that the Japanese troops had left American soldiers with along with the American lives affected. FDR also claims that “all measures shall be taken in our defense(America)” in order to preserve our independence. MLA Citation: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eml6lxlmjY FDR’s had listed many persuasive reasons why America should take all measures in our defense against the Japanese government. His statements of how many American lives were lost during the Pearl Harbor attack along with the many other attacks Japanese troops had demonstrated was a big reason why he thought we should fight back. The Japanese government was being a bully in a sense because they were attacking many nations such as Midway, Malaya, Hong Kong, Philippine islands all in one night and now Pearl Harbor. America’s promise of defending other nation took over and attempted to stop the hostilities demonstrated by the Japanese. THis speech deepened my understanding of the conflict of WWII because it went deeper into the conflict between the Japanese and America’s promise to defend other nations.
A Professor who teaches at Robert Morris University, John McCarthy, interviews WWII Veteran Carl Walpusk on his experience during the war. He further evaluates his experience as a child during the outbreak of WWII and the emotions that were boiling throughout America. Walpusk also goes over the topic of the many complications the troops had faced such as not being able t o fly to Germany because it was out of their range and the transformation of the economy. This interview contained many important pieces of information relating to my conflict. It told a story through the eyes of a WWII veteran which helped deepen my understanding of the war. It also had helped me gain a different perspective on what it would be like to be a war veteran or a citizen of America during the conflict. Overall this interview had moved me because Carl Walpusk told a story through his experience in the war on how we fought for our independence along with the independence of other nations. My example of photojournalism for my conflict was a photo essay published by www.history.com contains colored photographs of the war. This website includes multiple pictures of the many events and soldiers revolving around the time period of World War II. It contains many pictures from World War II including VJ-Day, End of World War II, Axis military leaders, Allied military leaders, Pearl Harbor, World War II soldiers. The colored pictures give the readers a sense of being present during the war time. The collection of colored photographs told a story that had moved me. When I look at the photographs, it makes me feel grateful that I didn't have to live and that time period and that America is a free country. It also makes me appreciate the soldiers that went into war to conserve the freedom of America. The color in the photos shows the emotion of the war along with the soldier in a greater way than the black and white photographs of earlier time. My example of an opinion article is an excerpt written by CNN states how WWII was devastating and which left many problems in the public realm such as fear over mass weapon destruction and public awareness of the holocaust. This article contains many examples of the effects of WWII on us as a society and the complications it took to put an end to this war. CNN also states how the end of WWII was complicated because of the fact it was many wars in one. This article was very informative in stated information on the effects of WWII which gave me an idea of how people were affected. It also gives the reader a vivid image of what the conditions of WWII were like through the eyes of the Jewish people living in the concentration camps. This article published by CNN gave me a deeper understanding of the conflict that I chose because it stated the effects of what they believed to be as a result of WWII.
